HERB-0404 - Ecology and Ethnobotany of Pinyon-Juniper Forests

Field and Classroom Course Exploring the Medicinal Plants, Fungi, and Ethnobotanical Traditions of the High Desert Woodlands

This course introduces students to the resilient plant and fungal medicine of pinyon-juniper forests, the transitional woodland ecosystems of the American Southwest. These forests, found between 5,000 and 7,500 feet, are home to a distinct community of medicinal species traditionally used for respiratory, digestive, nervous system, and skin-related conditions, as well as ceremonial and spiritual practices. Through ecological exploration and ethnobotanical study, students will identify, experience, and honor these species in their natural context. Students will gain practical experience in identifying, classifying, and preparing over 40 medicinal plants and fungi, and will learn how to ethically harvest and steward the high desert woodland bioregion with care and reciprocity.
