Foundations of Structure, Spatial Language & Embodied Movement Literacy

This foundational course introduces students to the core anatomical concepts, spatial terminology, and movement principles essential for all future massage, yoga, and bodywork education. Through guided movement labs, anatomical mapping, partner exploration, and visual diagrams, students learn to confidently navigate body planes, regions, positional language, and basic joint actions. This course establishes the embodied literacy and anatomical fluency required for safe, effective therapeutic practice.

Learning Objectives & Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Correctly use core anatomical terminology for positions, planes, and directions
  • Identify major body regions, cavities, and membranes and describe their spatial relationships
  • Describe and recognize basic joint classifications and movement types (flexion/extension, rotation, etc.)
  • Demonstrate increased kinesthetic literacy through guided movement and somatic exploration
  • Communicate anatomical concepts clearly in verbal discussion and written documentation
